Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

This easy-to-make frosting is one the best, most versatile frostings you can prepare. By adding cocoa powder a tablespoon at a time, it can be as chocolatey as you like, or a few drops of food coloring will create the tint you desire. But even in its “plain” state, cream cheese frosting is an always reliable and delicious topping to any cake.

Use with Carrot CakeSpice Cake and many other cake recipes. As you see in the photo, we frosted our Grandma’s Buttermilk Yellow Cake Cupcakes with this rich frosting.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1-pound box (3-3/4 cups) confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Blend the softened cream cheese and butter with an electric mixer.
  2. Beat in the sugar, a little at a time.
  3. Add the vanilla and pecans, if desired, and mix well.
