Vintage Fiesta Relish Tray Production: November, 1935 – late 1946
The colorful relish tray in the vintage Fiesta line from Homer Laughlin may be one of its most photographed, talked about pieces. There are five individual sections: four trays and a centerpiece that is called a coaster. The base of the set is refered to as a pie plate.
HLC originally sold relish trays to the distributors in one color, although it was not long before retailers began customizing the pieces into colorful assortments. Some collectors today seek out the original arrangenent, while others prefer instead to mix colors.
Relish trays were produced in the original five colors, as well as turquoise. The plates and coasters were also produced in the rare red stripe pattern.
The Schiffer Fiesta, Harlequin & Kitchen Kraft Dinnerwares book makes the interesting case that Frederick Hurton Rhead was strongly influenced by imported Japanese pottery, using the relish tray as an example.
Collectors and sellers sell the vintage Fiesta relish trays online every day.
