Browned Onion Gravy Recipe

Yes, we have a vegetarian gravy recipe on Texas Cooking! My vegetarian neighbor in Austin gave me this recipe as a good gravy to put over mashed potatoes. Browned Onion Gravy – it’s tasty! And be sure to use those Southern sweet onions.

This tasty gravy is great with Creamy Mashed Potatoes.

Brown Onion Gravy

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon safflower or olive oil
  • 1 large onion, halved and sliced
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable seasoning (like Spike)
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon
  • 1/8 teaspoon sage
  • 1/4 teaspoon chervil
  • dash of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet.
  2. Add onion slices and sauté over medium heat until onion wilts and begins to brown.
  3. Add water, vegetable seasoning, tarragon, sage, chervil and nutmeg. Bring to a boil and lower to medium-low heat.
  4. Cook until gravy is reduced to about 3/4 cup.
