Caroline’s Buttermilk Pie Recipe

This is a wonderful, old-fashioned pie. Don’t be put off by the buttermilk; this is a sweet and flavorful dessert. There’s no need to get your electric mixer out to make this pie. You can easily beat this to satisfaction by hand in a good mixing bowl, making a perfect Buttermilk Pie.

Perhaps you have heard the term chess pie. A buttermilk pie is chess pie, as in a custard pie. You will see variations of these pies with lemon, blueberry, chocolate and so on.

Description

Our recipe for a marvelous Southern Buttermilk Pie.  


Ingredients

  • 3 eggs, well beaten
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted and cooled
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shells

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine beaten eggs, melted butter, sugar and flour, and beat until smooth.
  3. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla. Pour into unbaked pie shell.
  4. Bake 10 minutes at 400°F. Reduce heat to 350°F and bake an additional 40 to 45 minutes, or until center is firm. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t over-brown.
